Built with abandonned materials from the Exposition Universelle of 1900, Villa Marie Vassilieff is a preserved alley which origins go back to the beginning of the XXth century, at the time when small artists studios and modest residencies filled Montparnasse. Numerous artists from Poland, Italy or Spain found refuge in this humble neighborhood. Among them, Russian artist Marie Vassilieff, who opened her studio in Chemin du Montparnasse around 1908, and where gathered Picasso, Braque, Léger or photographer Marc Vaux. The place will then host the Fine Arts Schools "Grande Masse", gallery Annick Lemoine, gallery Charles Sablon, and until 2013 the Montparnasse Museum...

In the framework of the European Heritage Days, Villa Vassilieff invites you to go back in time to discover the history of the site and its artistic and social legacy in a neighborhood marked by intercultural exchanges.

The afternoon will start with a focus on the history of the aisle and its most remarkable inhabitants, followed by a meeting with different players in Chemin du Montparnasse: artist studios, exhibition spaces, cinema productors and Yves Klein’s archives have been established here for two decades. As witnesses of the artistic activity and social history of this exceptionnal site, they will share hitherto unseen archives, unexpected anecdotes and intimate stories.

The Director Eric Darmon who’s also Mémoire Magnétique director, will recall the exciting era of Charles Sablon galerie spanning from 1980s and 1990s. The work of the Brazillian sculptor Franz Kraciberg, inspired by amazonian forest and fueled with ecologist ideology, will be exhibited at Espace Kracjberg, the very-site the artist lived in in the 1960’s. The Espace will hold the same day a literary event « Canalizinho ». During this gathering, fifteen writers will publicly read their texts. Finally, the artist Jacopo Leone in residence at Immanence will receive visitors in his exhibition/studio « Le Pêcheur d’Ombres ».

We will offer a snack at the end of this meeting.
